1. Sentence Structure (SVO Rule)
The basic English sentence structure is Subject + Verb + Object (SVO).
- ✅ She (subject) eats (verb) an apple (object). 
- ❌ Eats an apple she. (wrong order) 
Modifiers (adjectives/adverbs) must be placed correctly.
- ✅ She quickly finished her homework. 
- ❌ She finished quickly her homework. (adverb misplaced) 
2. Parts of Speech (8 Main Categories)
Each word in English belongs to a category:
- Nouns → Name of people, places, things, ideas. - Countable: book/books 
- Uncountable: water, advice 
 
- Pronouns → Replace nouns: he, she, it, they. 
- Verbs → Action/being words: run, think, is. 
- Adjectives → Describe nouns: tall, smart. 
- Adverbs → Describe verbs/adjectives: quickly, very. 
- Prepositions → Show relation: in, on, at. 
- Conjunctions → Connect ideas: and, but, because. 
- Interjections → Sudden feelings: Oh! Wow! 
3. Tenses (12 forms)
Present
- Simple: I play football. 
- Continuous: I am playing football. 
- Perfect: I have played football. 
- Perfect Continuous: I have been playing football. 
Past
- Simple: I played football. 
- Continuous: I was playing football. 
- Perfect: I had played football. 
- Perfect Continuous: I had been playing football. 
Future
- Simple: I will play football. 
- Continuous: I will be playing football. 
- Perfect: I will have played football. 
- Perfect Continuous: I will have been playing football. 
 Common Mistake:
❌ Yesterday, I am going to school.
✅ Yesterday, I went to school.
4. Subject–Verb Agreement
- Singular subject → singular verb 
 ✅ The boy plays.
- Plural subject → plural verb 
 ✅ The boys play.
⚠️ Special cases:
- Everyone, Someone, Nobody → Singular verb 
 ✅ Everyone is ready.
- Collective nouns: 
 ✅ The team is strong. (as one group)
 ✅ The team are arguing. (individual members)
5. Articles (a, an, the)
- a → before consonant sounds (a book, a car) 
- an → before vowel sounds (an apple, an hour → because hour starts with vowel sound) 
- the → specific things (the sun, the Taj Mahal, the Prime Minister) 
❌ She is a honest girl.
✅ She is an honest girl.
6. Prepositions
- Time: in (May, 2024), on (Monday), at (5 p.m.) 
- Place: in (a room), on (the table), at (the station) 
- Direction: into, onto, toward 
✅ He has lived here since 2010.
✅ I stayed here for two weeks.
7. Pronouns & Reference
- Subject: I, we, you, he, she, they 
- Object: me, us, him, her, them 
- Possessive: my, our, his, her, their 
- Reflexive: myself, yourself, themselves 
❌ Me is happy.
✅ I am happy.
8. Adjectives & Adverbs
- Adjective modifies noun: She is a beautiful girl. 
- Adverb modifies verb: She sings beautifully. 
Comparisons:
- Positive: tall 
- Comparative: taller 
- Superlative: tallest 
❌ She sings good.
✅ She sings well.
9. Active & Passive Voice
- Active: The chef cooked the meal. 
- Passive: The meal was cooked by the chef. 
Rule: Object of active sentence → Subject of passive sentence.
10. Direct & Indirect Speech
- Direct: He said, “I am tired.” 
- Indirect: He said that he was tired. 
Rules:
- Present → Past 
- Past → Past Perfect (sometimes) 
- Tomorrow → the next day 
- Today → that day 
11. Conditionals
- Zero: (facts/laws) If you heat ice, it melts. 
- First: (real future) If it rains, I will stay home. 
- Second: (imaginary present/future) If I had money, I would travel. 
- Third: (imaginary past) If I had studied, I would have passed. 
12. Modal Verbs
- Can → ability (She can swim.) 
- Could → past ability/polite (Could you help me?) 
- May/Might → possibility (It may rain.) 
- Must → strong obligation (You must wear a seatbelt.) 
- Should → advice (You should study.) 
13. Common Grammar Mistakes
- ❌ She don’t like coffee. 
 ✅ She doesn’t like coffee.
- ❌ I am agree. 
 ✅ I agree.
- ❌ He go yesterday. 
 ✅ He went yesterday.
14. Punctuation & Capitalization
- . ? ! → end sentences. 
- Commas → lists: I bought apples, bananas, and oranges. 
- Capital letters → Proper nouns & first word of sentence. 
15. Complex & Compound Sentences
- Compound (two main clauses + conjunction):

- Complex (main + subordinate clause):
